Business Plan
Directors and Senior Management
4.01 a) A Derek Tanner, Chairman
Derek has been with the company nearly sixty years. During this time he has also held many positions in the industry associations. He brings a great deal
of experience in this role. Now on a part time basis he is responsible, as Chairman, for the co-ordination of the policy decisions of the Board.
His executive responsibilities are now limited and he works with Peter on invoice control and payments. Most of this function is now computerised and as a
consequence fall off in Derek’s duties will entail.
4.02 b) Peter D Tanner, Managing Director
Peter took an HND in Business studies after leaving school and joined the company in 1975. He has had experience on inside and outside sales, the installation
of three computer systems over the years, Credit Control and Financial Director (appointed 1983). Now Managing Director (appointed 1985) his duties include the
practical implementation of Board policies through liason with approproate directors; the overseeing of all financial aspects of the business such as cashflow,
budgets, management figures, project costing, D.C.F. and all accounting and finance matters. He is also ultimately responsible for management information.
In addition Peter is now responsible for customer service and quality as the company is targeting an expansion of business from existing contacts, in addition to
new business. This involves all aspects of service and quality from answering the telephones promptly and courteously to handling complaints. Research has shown
that a properly handled complaint can, in fact, be turned to a company’s advantage and further sales can be generated from the complainant. As managing director
Peter’s position emphasises the importance of service to customers.
At the same time he also now has responsibility for Quality through the introduction of Total Quality Management. Clearly, this requires close liaison with the
Production Department and Warehouse and his knowledge of the computer system will be an advantage for Batch Traceability etc. Currently the quality failure rate
of 0.00£% on our manufactured products gives a good base for BS5750 certification.
In terms of reorganisation of the accounts department Peter will be assisted by Mike Jeffrey, the Company’s accounts manager, however further help will be given
by Coopers & Lybrand Deloitte in the short term. After the company position has been turned round it may be necessary to appoint a senior company accountant or
Finance Director. Clearly, Coopers will be in a good position to advise as to the necessity and level of appointment having worked closely with Mr Jeffrey during this time.
4.03 c) M I Kerlogue, Marketing Director
Mike commenced his career with Wiggins Teape as a management trainee. Having completed the course he later moved to Domtar Inc. where he was later promoted to
London Branch manager. Seven years later he joined Tanners as Commercial Manager and was promoted to the Board in 1983. His responsibilities prior to the reorganisation were as
Sales and Marketing Director with special emphasis on the South of England.
He now assumes the role of Marketing Director as the Company thrusts into targeted niche markets more aggressively. His responsibility is to ensure the company
expands its sales mix in high quality lines, value added bespoke manufacture and the direct consumer market. All three areas are more buoyant than the volume
production of commercial and contract grades. The company also has great strengths in these key areas. Mike has extensive contacts through his paper merchanting
and mills sales background to exploit the Sales and Distribution opportunities in collaboration with others. As such he is in an unique position to seek new markets and to develop and target existing products.
Mike also assumes the overall responsibility for distribution which was previously split between Bill Pearson and himself. A common strategy for all sites should ensure the service and costs are
better controlled in the future.
Mike’s knowledge of Paper, Paper Mills and Contracts places him in a strong position with regard to the procurement policy of the paper merchanting products. This is further enhanced by his position as
Secretary to Network Paper Stockists Ltd., a buying consortium of some £60 million between them. As a result Tanners has the advantage of a higher profile with suppliers and better buying power.
4.04 d) W Gwyn Rosser BSc, Production Director
Gwyn achieved a degree in Chemical Engineering and joined the Atomic Engineering Authority in a research role. He then lectured in Chemical Engineering at Reading College of Technology before joining the Paper
and Paper Products Industry Training Board as a Technical Training Adviser. He was promoted to Central Training Sevices Manager before joining Tanners in 1979. Gwyn is Chairman of the Envelope Manufacturers and
Manufacturing Stationers Association.
He is responsible for all aspects of production including procurement of manufacturing consumables and Human Resources.
It has been necessary to split the procurement function as whilst the Production Department uses paper as its main raw material it also purchases gum, cartons, inks, machine parts, engineering materials
etc. all of which are specialised. Clearly however, Gwyn and Mike have worked, and will continue to work, closely on paper used in manufacturing.
Gwyn has considerable knowledge of Human resources from his time at the PPPITB and hi is now responsible for the whole company in this field. This cuts through the department by department organisation that
may have been acceptable in a much smaller company. This move should improve communication, motivation and training.
He is also responsible for all engineering and research and development for the company. His position and experience are uniquely suited to these roles.
4.05 e) William L Pearson, Sales Director
Bill Pearson joined Wiggins Teape as a trainee in 1954 on leaving school. In 1962 he became a Sales Representative for Jackson's Mill Board and moved to Tanners in 1967. Since the mid 1970s he has been
responsible for all aspects of our Leeds branch - from sales to personnel. He was appointed to the Board in 1983.
Bill, having been responsible purely for the Northern Branch in Leeds, now assumes the role as Sales Director. In addition Bill still continues to oversee the Operational Control at Leeds although his
prime responsibility is to direct and motivate the entire sales force.
Under the previous organisation the Leeds and Crayford based representatives were reporting separately to Mike and Bill. This change will allow more unified approach to prevail. Bill has the necessary
experience to ensure this is successful and various alterations to the Sales force have already been made which will reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of the unit.
Senior Staff
4.06 Mike Jeffrey - Accounts Manager - Reports to Peter Tanner
Mike is an FCCA and has had experience in the Middle East and locally before joining the Company in 1988. In addition to his daily responsibilities he is also working with Coopers & Lybrand Deloitte in the preparation
of the financial aspects of the business plan.
Coopers will be assessing the needs of the Accounts and Financial Departments and making recommendations regarding the possible further strengthening of these areas.
4.07 Dennis Manning - Sales Manager South - Reported to Mike Kerlogue and now reports to Bill Pearson.
Dennis joined the company in 1976 as a Sales Representative and was appointed Sales Manager for the South of England in 1983. Previously he had worked for Spicers in South Africa.
His current role will be abolished under the new organisation and he will be employed in his best position as Senior Sales Representative/Key Account Manager.
4.08 Peter Nicholson - Sales Office Manager (Crayford) - Currently reports to Mike Kerlogue
Peter is due to retire in August however due to the rationalisation and change of responsibilities he is staying on until October by which time his successor will have been appointed.
His duties include overseeing Inside Sales, providing back up support for Representatives, export documentation, some distribution responsibilities and general administration.
This position will be changed with the new appointment to include a tighter control over the Sales force (inside and out) and with the responsibility to start and oversee a telesales operation. This will
further underline the company's commitment to a stronger and unified sales approach.
4.09 Paul Dalton – Production Manager – Reports to Gwyn Rosser
Paul joined the company as a trainee in 1966. Having progressed through inside and outside sales he became Sales Manager in 1979. In 1983 he was appointed to oversee the move to Dartford and was moved
to Factory Manager in 1985. In 1987 he was promoted to Production Manager in order to streamline all aspects of production and improve efficiency.
No alteration will be made to his position as a result of the reorganisation.
4.10 Kevin Collins – Leeds Office Manager- Reports to Bill Pearson
Kevin joined the company in December 1990 from E.J. Arnold where he was Chief Buyer. His knowledge of our business and adminstration skills have allowed Bill
Pearson to spend less time in operational duties at Leeds.
No change is envisaged with his position in the reorganisation.
